One of the oldest international parliamentary unions, founded in 1889 was opened today. The union features more than 173 countries and over 11 inter-parliamentary organisations and this year, the 137th assembly was held in St Petersburg, Russia. It promotes respect of human rights, development of parliamentarism and inter-ethnic bulding of peace.
Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia delivered a speech in front of all the members of the Inter Parliamentary Unions (IPU). Additionally, the president of Russia awarded Saber Chowdhury, the president of the IPI dhe Order of Friendship due to the major contribution to development of inter-parliamentary ties, consolidation of cooperation and mutual understanding between the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation and the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
Valentina Matviyenko and Vyacheslav Volodin, speakers of the upper and lower houses of the Russian Parliaments took part and presented the decoration.
